S.I. No. 102/2026 - Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (Education and Training) (Integrated Course) (Amendment) Rules 2026

The Council of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland, in exercise of the functions conferred on the said Society by section 11 (as amended by section 11 of the Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2024 (No. 23 of 2024)) of the Pharmacy Act 2007 (No. 20 of 2007), (as adapted by the Health and Children (Alteration of Name of Department and Title of Minister) Order 2011 ( S.I. No. 219 of 2011 )) and for the purpose of giving further effect to Directive 2005/36/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 7 September 20051 , as amended by Commission Delegated Directive (EU) of 4 March 20242 , with the consent of the Minister for Health, hereby makes the following rules:— | ||
1. (1) These Rules may be cited as the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (Education and Training) (Integrated Course) (Amendment) Rules 2026. | ||
(2) The Principal Rules, Rule 14 of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (Continuing Professional Development) Rules 2015 ( S.I. No. 553 of 2015 ), the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (Education and Training) (Integrated Course) (Amendment) Rules 2017 ( S.I. No. 97 of 2017 ), the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (Education and Training) (Integrated Course) (Amendment) Rules 2020 ( S.I. No. 148 of 2020 ), the Rules of 2021 and these Rules may be cited together as the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (Education and Training) (Integrated Course) Rules 2014 to 2026. | ||
2. In these Rules— | ||
“Principal Rules” means the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (Education and Training) (Integrated Course) Rules 2014 ( S.I. No. 377 of 2014 ); | ||
“Rules of 2021” means the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (Education and Training) (Integrated Course) (Amendment) Rules 2021 (S.I. 79 of 2021). | ||
3. The Schedule to the Principal Rules, as amended by the Rules of 2021, is amended – | ||
(a) in paragraph 1, by substituting for subparagraphs (a) to (q) the following subparagraphs: | ||
“(a) Plant and animal biology, | ||
(b) Physics, | ||
(c) General and inorganic chemistry, | ||
(d) Organic chemistry, | ||
(e) Analytical chemistry, | ||
(f) Pharmaceutical chemistry, including analysis of medicinal products, | ||
(g) General and applied biochemistry (medical), | ||
(h) Anatomy, physiology, pathology and pathophysiology; medical terminology, | ||
(i) Microbiology, | ||
(j) Pharmacology and pharmacotherapy, | ||
(k) Pharmaceutical technology, | ||
(l) Biopharmaceutical technology, | ||
(m) Toxicology, | ||
(n) Pharmacognosy, | ||
(o) Legislation and, where appropriate, professional ethics, | ||
(p) Genetics and pharmacogenomics, | ||
(q) Immunology, | ||
(r) Clinical pharmacy, | ||
(s) Pharmaceutical care, | ||
(t) Social pharmacy, | ||
(u) Public health, including epidemiology, | ||
(v) Pharmacy practice, and | ||
(w) Pharmacoeconomics.”; and | ||
(b) in paragraph 3, by substituting for subparagraphs (a) to (e) the following subparagraphs: | ||
“(a) adequate knowledge of medicines and the substances used in the manufacture of medicines; | ||
(b) adequate knowledge of pharmaceutical technology and the physical, chemical, biological and microbiological testing of medicinal products; | ||
(c) adequate knowledge of the metabolism and the effects of medicinal products and of the action of toxic substances, and of the use of medicinal products; | ||
(d) adequate knowledge to evaluate scientific data concerning medicines in order to be able to supply appropriate information on the basis of this knowledge; | ||
(e) adequate knowledge of the legal and other requirements associated with the pursuit of pharmacy; | ||
(f) adequate knowledge of clinical pharmacy and pharmaceutical care, as well as the skills of their practical application; | ||
(g) adequate knowledge and skills of public health and its repercussions in health promotion and disease management; | ||
(h) adequate knowledge and skills on inter- and multidisciplinary collaboration, interprofessional practice and communication; | ||
(i) adequate knowledge of information technology and digital technology and skills on its practical application,”. | ||
