SOLICITORS ACT 1954 (SECTION 44) ORDER 2007

Notice of the making of this Statutory Instrument was published in

“Iris Oifigiúil” of 27th March, 2007.

I, MICHAEL MC DOWELL, Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 44(6) (inserted by section 52 of the Solicitors (Amendment) Act 1994 (No. 27 of 1994)) of the Solicitors Act 1954 (No. 36 of 1954) (as adapted by the Justice (Alteration of Name of Department and Title of Minister) Order 1997 ( S.I. No. 298 of 1997 )), and being satisfied that, on the day appointed by this Order, reciprocal provisions will be in operation in the jurisdiction to which this Order relates in respect of solicitors whose names are on the roll of solicitors maintained under section 9 (inserted by section 65 of the Solicitors (Amendment) Act 1994 ) of the Solicitors Act 1954 , hereby order as follows:

1. This Order may be cited as the Solicitors Act 1954 (Section 44) Order 2007.

2. The 21st day of March 2007 is appointed as the day on which section 44 (inserted by section 52 of the Solicitors (Amendment) Act 1994 (No. 27 of 1994)) of the Solicitors Act 1954 (No. 36 of 1954) shall come into operation in relation to the profession of solicitor in the State of New South Wales in the Commonwealth of Australia.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

This order brings section 44 of the Solicitors Act, 1954 , inserted by section 52 of the Solicitors (Amendment) Act, 1994 , into operation in relation to the profession of solicitor in New South Wales. The effect of the order is that a solicitor qualified in New South Wales may be admitted as a solicitor in Ireland subject to the corresponding conditions under which solicitors whose names are on the roll may be admitted to practise in that country.
